Welcome to an introduction to kana.

This site is designed to help you remember the Japanese kana (hiragana and katakana) characters.

Hiragana and katakana are syllabaries (a set of written characters representing specific sounds or syllables), which each contain 46 primary phonetic characters and 58 variants of the primary characters for the production of related sounds.

What the links at the top and bottom do:

  • Main — This link will take you to this page.
  • Hiragana — A section with 9 hiragana lessons and practice for those lessons.
  • Katakana — A section with 9 katakana lessons and practice for those lessons.
  • Kana Charts — List of 4 charts:The 46 primary characters, 25 diacritical characters and 33 combination characters and a printable chart.
  • Links — Additional Japanese sites, including dictionaries and other learning resources for the language and culture.
